“I’m 90% sure I’m here because I have a song called ’22’,” he joked. Taylor Swift this Wednesday (18.05), while speaking at the graduation of the class of 2022 at New York University (NYU).

Swift was honored as a Doctor of Fine Arts by NYU and had posted a video on social media showing her arrival in New York right up to the moment she donned her gown for graduation.

She continued, “I would like to thank NYU for technically making me, at least on paper, a doctor. Not the kind of doctor you would want to have around in an emergency, unless your emergency is like creating a composition. Or if your emergency was that you needed a person who could name over 100 cat breeds in a minute,” joked the Grammy Award winner for best album for “Folklore.”

Taylor congratulated the graduates for passing under unusual circumstances, as everyone in college in normal times stresses about passing exams, but beyond that, today’s students have had to think about studying in the midst of a pandemic.

The speech continues and she says that she is very happy to receive this honor, since she left school before completing high school and dedicating herself to music, because of this, the singer never had a graduation.

Despite the jokes, Taylor recalled difficult moments in her career and urged students not to be afraid to take risks and live their dreams. “I’m a big advocate of not hiding your enthusiasm for things. It seems to me that there’s a problem with you being happy for the things you love… Never be shy about trying. Lack of effort is a myth. The people I wanted the least are the people I wanted to date and be friends with in high school. The people I’m most excited about are the people I now hire to work for my company.”

Swift told the graduates that they are all writers, to some degree, like her: “I went and released 11 albums and in the process shifted from country to pop to alternative to folk. You write differently in your Instagram stories than in your thesis… We are all literary chameleons, and I find it fascinating.”

The singer spoke at length about the reactions she has received since she was in the public eye from the age of 15 “I had to become an adult very young. I was charged not to make mistakes as I needed to be an inspiration to young people. Everything revolved around the idea that mistakes and failure were the same thing. This has not been my experience. My experience is that my mistakes have led to the best things in my life. Get up, dust off and see who still wants to leave with you… this is a gift,” he continued.

Taylor also recalled when she was “cancelled” in 2017 after having a leaked phone conversation with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. “Being canceled on the internet and almost losing my career gave me an excellent opportunity. Knowledge of all different types of wine,” she revealed.

“I know the pressure of living your life through the lens of perfectionism. And I know I’m talking to perfectionists because you are here today graduating from NYU,” she said.

“In your life, you will inevitably talk wrong, trust the wrong person, react badly, hurt people who don’t deserve it, think too much, think nothing at all… hit rock bottom and finally resolve the pain you’ve caused… repeat… I won’t lie. These mistakes will cause you to miss things. The scary news is that you are alone now, but the nice news is that you are alone now.”

“As long as we’re lucky enough to be breathing, let’s take a deep breath, take a deep breath and exhale. And now I’m a doctor, so I know how breathing works.” In conclusion, Swift said, recalling that hit from a few years ago: “Let’s keep dancing like we’re the class of 22.”
